Evangelical Christians speak up on Colombia peace deal

Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos is trying to save an internal peace deal after it was narrowly rejected by voters across the country.

Government officials led by chief negotiator Humberto de la Calle met their the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on Tuesday to try to reopen negotiations between the parties.

Evangelical Christians have been particularly vocal around the deal, campaigning alongside business leaders in the country and consulting with Mr Santos.

After these consultations, the President announced an extension to the current ceasefire with FARC until 31st October in an attempt to give the peace deal more of a chance.

Shortly after Mr Santos announced he was extending the ceasefire, rebel leader Timochenko tweeted: "And after that the war continues?"

Despite an angry split shortly after he took office, Mr Santos has contacted former Colombian president Alvaro Uribe for help saving the peace deal.

In what is believed to be their first encounter in years, the two men will meet on Wednesday after a brief phone conversation earlier in the week.

"Time is very important. We can't prolong this process and this dialogue for a long time because we're in a grey zone, a sort of limbo, that is risky and can wash away the entire process," Mr Santos said.

Any renegotiation would probably lead to tougher terms for the rebels than the ones reached earlier this year and it is not yet clear whether the rebels are ready to enter into fresh discussions.
