Filipino president: where is God in justice?

by Hannah Tooley

The controversial leader, who calls himself a Christian, was elected to power in the Catholic country earlier in the year.

He is trying to bring back the death penalty in the country and has been heavily criticised by Catholic bishops for what's been described as a vigilante justice approach to crime.

Speaking about his views on capital punishment, he is quoted in The Times as saying the justice given by God was not enough: "The people of the Philippines no longer believed in the law because the fear is not there.

"The problem is... what if there is no God? When a baby is taken from the mother's arms and raped and killed, where is God?"

"In Syria when women and children who do not want to have sex with Isis [Islamic State] are murdered. So, where is God?"

In May 2016 the leader called for hanging for rape, murder and smuggling drugs.

The president has been condemned in the past for swearing towards Pope Francis, insulting US President Barack Obama and making a joke about a missionary who was murdered and raped.
