Franklin Graham goes vegan

by Aaron James

The son of famous evangelist Billy Graham said on Facebook that his love for various meat-based foods had left him heavier than he would have liked.

Graham, who has over five million likes on his Facebook page, encouraged people to provide vegan recipes for him to try as he embarks on his new diet on January 1.

Vegans do not consume any products which come from animals, for example meat, eggs or dairy. A vegan diet has been known to help people lose weight as well as reduce their risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Experts recommend people on vegan diets take special attention to get nutrients they may be lacking because of an absence of meat or dairy, for example calcium, vitamin B12 or omega 3 fatty acids, by specially selecting certain foods or taking supplements.

He said: "Beginning January 1, I'm going to try something drastic — I'm going on a vegan diet. Vegetables and fruit anyway you can fix them.

"Do you think I'll survive? Everyone is betting I won't last two days. Remember in the Bible, Daniel went on a complete vegetable diet and after 10 days his appearance was better than the others who hadn't.

"What do you think — how long will I last?"

Encouraging the evangelist, Traci commented: "Remember I can do all things in christ Jesus"

Patricia added: "First week is hardest... after that slowly step by step! You have great FAITH! I believe you will do it. I have to change myself."

And Judy said: "You can do this, God is with you."
