Hermit wanted: Church appeals for someone 'at peace with themselves' to live in Cliffside residence

The candidate must be willing to live without heating, running water, electricity and internet between April and November annually.

"Since its creation 350 years ago, the Saalfelden hermitage was inhabited every year. But we don't have a successor to the last hermit," said local cleric Alois Moser.

The first resident hermit settled down in a rock cave on the mountain in the 16th century. A chapel was built on the site in the 17th century.

A portrait of Saint George from that era is preserved inside the chapel.

Candidates must be "at peace with themselves" and have a Christian belief.

Whoever is selected won't be alone all the time; they must be willing to greet and socialise with visiting pilgrims.

Applications are open until 15 March and details can be found on the Saalfelden website.
