Italian PM weighs in on carol concert debate

by Hannah Tooley

PM Matteo Renzi said that: "Christmas is much more important than a headmaster being provocative.

If he thinks he's promoting integration and coexistence in this way, he appears to have made a very big mistake."

Head teacher, Marco Parma, 63, decided to postpone the Christmas concert and replace it with an evening of song in January, calling it "a winter conference" and removing religious music.

The head of the Garofani school also refused parent's requests to teach the children carols in their lunch breaks, saying: "In a multi-ethnic environment, it causes problems," according to The Guardian.

Mr Parma handed in his resignation following the backlash, and he denied that his decision was a step backwards in the fight against religious extremism.
