Keep Greece in prayer, says Athens church leader

by Hannah Tooley

The country is edging closer to economic collapse because there has not yet been a deal made over its massive debts, and the European Central Bank refuses extend its financial support.

There is currently a 60 euro limit on ATM withdrawals in the country.

Revd Canon Malcolm Bradshaw, the Senior Chaplain at the Anglican Church in Athens is calling on Christians to pray for Greece.

Speaking to Premier, he said: "Hold the Greek situation in prayer, and hopefully wisdom will prevail."

He added that pensions and the civil service have been a drain on the country's funds: "Up until now pensions have been pretty luxurious here in Greece, and a country can't continue to pay out on the kind of pensions which people have been enjoying.

"It's a hard message, but there just isn't the money around."

He said there have been tensions between Brussels and the country's government.

One of the things the EU wants to do is to cut the civil service. He said: "It has the largest civil service per population in the whole of Europe.

"That needs to be done because it's an incredible drain on the finances."
