Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis could be back to work Friday after gay marriage license battle

by Aaron James

Mrs Davis was jailed last Thursday for refusing to issue them because of her Christian beliefs, before being released five days later.

The Supreme Court of America ruled earlier this year that gay couples had a constitutional right to be married as well as straight couples, thus making Kim Davis' refusal to issue licenses illegal.

Upon her released last Tuesday, Mrs Davis said: "I just want to give God the glory. His people have rallied, and you are a strong people."

She has received support from the Republican senator Mike Huckabee, and partial support from Madonna's gay brother Martin Ciccone and the Lesbian and Gay Christian Association of America, who both said while they do not agree with Kim Davis' position, she should be allowed to fight for her rights just like gay people have.

Others have also said prison is an unneccessarily harsh sentence to give Mrs Davis.

Kim Davis is an elected official and is therefore not allowed to quit her position per se. She could be impeached by the Kentucky legislature, however they have not been in session.

Having confirmed that Kim Davis would be returning to work either tomorrow or Monday, the lawyers representing her said: ""Kim cannot and will not violate her conscience."

Asked whether she would continue to refuse to give out marriage licenses and risk going back to prison, her lawyer said: "You'll find out in the near future."
