Kim Davis remains defiant as hometown billboard mocks her views on gay marriage

by Desmond Busteed

Although Ms Davis has revealed she is not going to interfere with her deputies issuing marriage licences, despite questioning whether they are valid.

The Rowan County Clerk read from a hand-written statement on her first day back in the office on Monday after a stint in jail for five days for defying a federal judge.

She choked up as she was speaking, saying she was torn between obeying her God and following the judge's orders.

Kim Davis stopped issuing licences after the Supreme Court legalised gay marriage, in defiance of a series of court orders.

US District Judge David Bunning held her in contempt and ordered her to jail. In her absence, her deputies have issued at least seven licenses to gay couples.

A massive poster defending gay marriage has been erected on a Rowan County road, directed specifically at Davis.

"Dear Kim Davis, the fact that you can't sell your daughter for three goats and a cow means we've already redefined marriage," the billboard reads.

Humanitarian organisation Planting Peace said in a statement that the "intent of the billboard is to expose this narrow interpretation by Davis and others that they use to defend their discrimination against the LGBTQ community."

Supporters say the message refers to a Bible scripture which says women can be sold into marriage as slaves.

Planting Peace said they are pointing out that "a substantial number of zealots" use their religion as a reason for disagreeing with gay marriage, while ignoring other parts of the Bible that many consider equally antiquated.
