A poll's found most US citizens want greater restrictions on abortion.
The Marist poll of nearly 2800 adults found 83 per cent of Americans said abortion should only be allowed only to save a mother's life, while 77 per cent said it should be totally banned.
In terms of party politics 91 per cent of people who voted for Donald Trump wanted "significant restrictions" on abortion, while 55 per cent of Hillary Clinton supporters wanted the same.
The results of the poll were unexpected, given that more people identified themselves as pro-choice (52 per cent) rather than pro-life (42 per cent) before taking it. The other six per cent did not list their stance.
The poll was commissioned by Knights of Columbus, one of the world's largest Catholic fraternal organisations.
It broke down respondents by political affiliation and race, but not by religion, so it's unknown how many Christians took part in the study versus non-Christians.
The figures come after Donald Trump banned US government funding for overseas clinics and charities which promote or provide abortions earlier this week.
