Mother Teresa could become a saint in 2016

by Hannah Tooley

The news follows the discovery of a healing attributed to her in Brazil in which a man is thought to have recovered from brain tumours following prayers for her help.

The Vatican has not confirmed that Mother Teresa will be canonised however The Daily Mail has reported that a delegation was sent to Brazil over the summer to investigate the so-called miracle that occurred in Sao Paulo.

Mother Teresa was beatified - when the Catholic Church recognise that a person enters Heaven - by Pope John Paul II in 2003, after the first healing miracle was found soon after her death.

Before sainthood a second healing miracle is needed.

It has come to light that Fr Elmiran Ferreira Santos told church authorities in Brazil earlier this year, that a man in his parish recovered from brain tumours when his wife prayer for Mother Teresa to intervene in his fate.

It has been reported that doctors were shocked when the tumours disappeared and the man walked out of intensive care two days later.

But these reports are being played down by the Vatican who claim it is too early to confirm whether she will be made a Saint during the Holy Year of Mercy next year.

Revd Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesperson, said that canonisation "would be lovely" but emphasises that the Pope needs to approve the so-called Brazilian miracle.

And according to reports, she could be canonised in September on the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death in 1997.
