It will open in early 2017 and will beproduced in late pope's home country.

The musical is based on the life of Pope John Paul II and reports suggest that hundreds of tickets for shows have already been sold.

The production, called Karol, will premier in Krawkow in February in 2017 according to Radio Poland.

The late pontiff was born Karol Wojtyla and was archbishop of the city for more than a decade before being elected Pope in 1978.

Poland is a overwhelmingly Catholic country, home to around 37 million believers.

The productive is expected to use a combination of pop and rock songs as well as dance performances to tell the story of his life.

The show touches on many significant historical events including the Second World War as well as the rise and fall of communism in eastern Europe.

Artistic Airector Michal Kaczmarczyk told Rzeczpospolita Polska that Pope John Paul II lived through lots of interesting times.

He said: "There is no other figure in the history of our country who embodies the most important events of the 20th Century that happened in Poland and Europe."

Those behind the musical say they want to show sides of the former pontiff's personality that many may not have encountered before.
