Pope's Instagram reaches 3m followers

He has been using the photo sharing social media app for 20 weeks and has posted material more than 140 times, including videos.

The account is in English and subtitled in other languages, unlike his Twitter account which posts in nine languages.

The @franciscus shows the daily activities of the Holy Father as well as special events like the pope's recent visit to Krakow for World Youth Day.

Speaking to News.VA the Prefect of the Secretariat for Communications, Monsignor Dario Viganò said they decided to open an Instagram account so that pictures could tell stories.

The account has now reached millions of people who comment and 'like' photos and videos each day.

Instagram boasts more than 150 million monthly active users.
