Pray Haiti has hope after Hurricane Matthew wreaks havoc

by Hannah Tooley

At least 11 people have been killed by the storm so far, including at least 5 in Haiti.

Hurricane Matthew, which is packing winds of 145 mph, is roaring towards the southern Bahamas after affecting Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti.

Forecasters reported tropical storm conditions were already spreading over the south-eastern Bahamas, with hurricane conditions expected in coming hours.

South Carolina in the USA is also issuing an evacuation order so a million people would have time to leave the coast and The Red Cross has put out a call for volunteers.

Monica Napier, Programme Manager at Christian relief charity Samaritan's Purse, told Premier's News Hour: "We're getting reports at the moment that there's lots of severe flooding, lots of roads have been totally flooded and that bridges have collapsed.

"A third of the population are under the age of 14 [in Haiti], and so you can imagine there are numerous youth who are just seeing disaster after disaster, so just pray for them that they'll see hope and they'll be able to recuperate what they've lost and they'll be able to start their lives again."

Listen to Premier's Aaron James speak to Monica Napier here:

Premier also spoke with Tearfund's humanitarian director Oenony Chadburn about how the Christian organisation is monitoring events in Haiti.

Oenony also explained to Premier's Alex Williams how her relatives in the country are doing and you can hear their interview by clicking here:

A Monthly Gift Of $11 Makes A World Of Difference

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
