Safety fears ahead of Pope event in Poland

The report by the Government Centre for Security (GCS) has been released by the Polish 24-hour television news channel, TVN24.

It reportedly concludes a site set to host the World Youth Day 2016 (WYD) Mass on July 31 does not have proper access and evacuation routes, and there is a major power line running nearby.

Another concern raised was that a leak in the nearby dykes along the Vistula River - the longest and largest river in Poland - could pose a threat.

Ms Szydlo from the GSC said the findings will be used to improve security at the WYD event, which is expected to draw around two million young people.

It forms part of a five-day visit to Poland by Pope Francis and his itinerary includes delivering a speech at the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Founded by Pope Saint John Paul II and first held in Rome in 1984, World Youth Day is a gathering of young people from around the globe for the profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
