Sudanese government prepares to demolish 25 churches

by Antony Bushfield

According to Radio Tamazuj officials will claim at least 25 places of worship are illegal and "trespassing into residential areas".

A local pastor told the broadcaster the move would mainly target churches in Khartoun and that he suspected it "was a plan" to drive Christians underground.

Sudan is a Muslim nation with a sizeable Christian minority of around 26 per cent.

It's thought some of the churches that could be demolished were built without approval of the state.

In 2014 the country banned the construction of new Christian places of worship claiming the nation had enough.

There are no details on when the demolitions could start or if the churches will be given warning.

In the past Sudanese authorities have taken action against churches with little or no warning.
