Archbishop Jacques Behnan Hindo of Hassaké-Nisibi, a Syrian Catholic archbishop has claimed the US has joined forces with al-Qaeda to try to remove Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
Archbishop Hindo thinks it is misleading for the west to speak out supporting what he calls "moderate rebels" in Syria, because these groups do not exist, he said in The Catholic Herald.
He added that he believes western military intervention in Syria is misguided because it has the potential to make Syria "like Libya", where there is a crisis in government and fighting between rival groups since the west helped bring about the fall of President Gaddafi in 2011.
John McCain, US Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, has admitted that the US is supporting anti-Assad rebels at war with the Syrian government.
He spoke about the role of the US in the war in a CNN interview, where he also said that the US was angry Russian jets had started bombing Islamist rebels in Syria.
Archbishop Hindo said: "US Senator John McCain protested saying that the Russians are not bombing the positions of ISIS, but rather the anti-Assad rebels trained by the CIA.
"I find these words are disturbing.
"They represent a blatant admission that behind the war against Assad there is also the CIA," he told Fides, a Vatican-based news agency.
"Western propaganda keeps talking about moderate rebels, who do not exist.
"There is something very disturbing about all this - there is a superpower that since September 11 protests because the Russians hit the militias of al-Qaeda in Syria.
"What does it mean, (that) al-Qaeda is now a US ally, just because in Syria it has a different name? But do they really despise our intelligence and our memory?"
He finished: "The Syrians will decide if and when Assad has to go away, and not the Daesh (IS) or the West and it is certain that if Assad goes away now, Syria will become like Libya."
Russian authorities have insisted that only terrorist groups have been targeted.
However Mr McCain in his CNN interview said he could "absolutely confirm" Russian jets bombed "our Free Syrian Army, or groups that have been armed and trained by the CIA, because we have communications with people there."
