Vatican in talks with Cuba on possible Pope visit

by Hannah Tooley

According to Reuters, the Holy See said it was in preliminary dicussions with Cuba on a potential papal vistit to the communist state.

"Still at too early a stage to be able to talk about a firm decision and an operational plan," said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi.

In December it was reported Pope Francis held secret talks at the Vatican between U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro.

Earlier this week, the US removed Cuba from a list of state sponsors of terrorism, saying it should never have been on the list to begin with, in a further example of a traw in relations between the two countries.

Pope Francis will visit the U.S.A in late September, meeting Barack Obama in Washington.

Both of the Pope's predecessors, Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul II, visited the country during their papacies.
