New Year's Revolution

January 4th, friends, was D-Day.

'Dragging Yourself Back to Work Day' for the majority, as the bank holiday weekend ended.

'Divorce Day' for some unhappy couples, as more lawyers are called to start divorce proceedings after stressful family Christmases than any other time of year.

'Diminishing Bank Balance Day', as the 2.5% VAT increase came into play at midnight on January 3rd, and the country tip-toed nervously from Christmas excess into January austerity.

And finally 'Decision Day' for most of us, as New Year's resolutions were solidified and started.

So resolutions will be made but, according to the statistics, resolutions will also be broken or forgotten. These self-made promises ring hollow when it’s the same thing every year. Lose weight, travel, find love. Save money, volunteer, get a promotion.

But how can we make a resolution for 2011 that won't sit in the loft with that rowing machine? Or glare at us from the corner of the room like those new high-tech trainers? We can attempt to shift that spare tyre, take up line-dancing, or save our pennies for a hiking holiday to Peru. These aren’t bad ideas…and may even last ‘til February! But what about resolving to spend more time with God? Concentrated time in prayer or reading the Bible, and constant time in His presence?

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians outlines the hope we have which is greater than any resolution we can make for ourselves. The hope to know our God better each day:

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. (Ephesians 1: 17-19)
