Here we bring you updates, clips from the film and the trailer PLUS interviews with the cast and crew. If you are on Facebook you can share news of this film with your friends via the links at the bottom of the page.

Synopsis

Martin Sheen, plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James.

Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son better, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage, leaving his "California bubble life" behind.

Armed with his son's backpack and guidebook, Tom navigates the 800km historical pilgrimage from the French Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela in the north west of Spain, but soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey.

While walking The Camino, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, all broken and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen) a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt) who is suffering from a bout of "writer's block."

From the hardship experienced along 'The Way' this unlikely quartet of misfits create an everlasting bond and Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again, and discovers the difference between "The life we live and the life we choose."

'The Way' was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago.

Reactions from the first Premier Radio screening

On Wednesday 23rd February, Premier and Icon Film Distribution co-hosted a private screening of 'The Way' to an audience of some 200 people, including church leaders, and Christian and secular press, at the prestigious May Fair Hotel in London's West End. The assembled guests were joined by lead actor Martin Sheen and actor/director Emilio Estevez for an exclusive live stage interview and Q&A with the audience lasting 30 minutes. As the closing credits rolled, the audience burst into appreciative applause and then rose to a standing ovation as the actors entered the cinema. Here are just some of the reactions from members of the audience present:

"I was very glad to see the film, which was much better than I expected."

Christopher Howse, Daily Telegraph

"I commend Mr Sheen and Mr Estevez for daring to create something that Hollywood ultimately rejects, a very down to earth, natural and unembellished story. But this is why the story and the pilgrimage itself works so well - true inspiration, true pain and suffering, true scenery etc is much more hard hitting and much more compelling."

Flora Thompson, Editorial, Methodist Recorder

"The Way made me cry three times; once out of sadness, then joy and finally out of sheer awe. This is a must see for all Christians and they should take their friends."

David Payne, Director of Catholic Evangelisation Services

"It's great that film companies are now recognising the power of marketing films with spiritual theme to a Christian audience and teaming up with Premier Radio to do so. I thoroughly enjoyed the screening of The Way. The audience was diverse, representing the UK's different streams of Christianity. The film was thought provoking and reflective and it was fantastic that the audience had an opportunity to engage with and ask questions of its Hollywood Stars during the question and answer session after the film. I will definitely be mentioning the film in 'Keep The Faith', Britain's leading magazine about the black faith community here in the UK."

Marcia Dixon, Editor, Keep the Faith

"The Way is a joyful, uplifting and hugely enjoyable tribute to one of Europe's iconic journeys. It captures the Camino with integrity, and portrays brilliantly the gentle surgery, which the ancient pilgrim route performs on the human heart. Like the travellers in the film, the movie has a surface ambition, but its scope goes much wider and deeper. It is a film for everyone, which deserves to do well. It will certainly do good."

Austen Ivereigh, Coordinator, Catholic Voices

"I’d thought about taking part in the Camino de Santiago de Compostela as a friend of mine had completed it on two occasions. Watching this film, I felt as though I was really there, experiencing the beauty and the challenge of this unique pilgrimage. I loved the realism of the main characters and the inclusion of the true pilgrims; it took on an almost documentary style. I laughed and I cried and I deeply appreciated the restraint and the avoidance of ‘Hollywood’. I do hope they take up my suggestion of a sequel set in Ireland perhaps set at Croagh Patrick. I’d like to mention how excellent the soundtrack was and how it complemented the film."

Dana Scallon, Singer, Former MEP and Premier Christian Radio Presenter

"I really did enjoy the movie, it was moving and funny and the locations were just beautiful. Great cast too - a mix of familiar and unknowns (for me at least) that worked really well together."

Sophie Bradley, Media & PR Officer, CAFOD

There will be opportunity for all those in any form of church leadership and influence to preview 'The Way' before its release. Bookmark this page and keep coming back for more updates.

Hi Mark.I have just received The Way' all the way from Australia. Thanks for your enmouragecent Enjoy the Journey'. I WILL!Mark I discovered you when someone told me about a film The Way' a real shot movie created by Hollywood with a story of someone dying etc. Of course it is a taste for someone who has never walked Camino. But not the real deal!!!!A friend of mine walked Carmino' and I joined him for the last three days from Santiago to Cabo de Finistera, where the walkers all burn there clothes beside the Atlantic Ocean. I will always remember my all be it short walk and then discovered your film which in fact is the real deal' the pain, passion, unwinding story and spiritual growth. I like what you said at the end about the baggage we collect in our lives, very true.I brought your film to share with people because no way can you explain it and your journey does this very well.Carry on with this good film making if you're ever close to Amsterdam drop by and well have a few tinnys'. I'm also conected to film.Best wishes Christopher.

I went to see The Way last night in a preview screening in Leicester Square (http://www.premier.org.uk/features/the%20way.aspx). Thought it was excellent. There was a great mix of moments of pathos, and I think I counted at least 8 points that the audience laughed out loud through the film. The audience broke into spontanous applause at the end of the film...

I walked the Camino 5 years ago on my gap year after graduating. It was a very special experience and one I remember to this day. I toured France, Spain, Portugal and Italy that year but my most profound memories was of the Camino. I'm not Catholic but that didn't seem to be an issue. The Camino gives you time to question and ponder your life. I found that even walking in a group I was able to find space for myself and the beautiful unspoilt scenery of northern Spain was sheer joy. I don't regularly listen to Premier but am really pleased to see you championing this film and more so the Camino.

@James Davenport & Lenny: the movie will be on national release in 'key cities', so it will not get out to the highways and byways. There is a limited promotional budget for the film and that will mean that there will only be selective regional preview screenings. At the moment, these are looking likely to be in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds and Glasgow. Stay tuned for further details....

Niamh (post Wednesday 2nd March 2011), I really like your story of family, marriage and parenting! I work in Family Life Ministry (www.flm.org.uk) and would love to be able to use this as an example of the changing beauty of family life and spirituality. May I? I will walk part of the Camino (the Irish/English route) in Ocober this year with my two sisters, my youngest son and one of my nieces (my sister's youngest daughter). We are doing it in honour of our dad, James Finegan, who died of dementia 19 months ago. We discovered how little support there is for families of dementia sufferers and wanted to do something to help families in the future. The whole story so far is at www.justgiving.com/somethingmadfordad. With all best wishes to you and all your family.

My husband and I walked the Camino on the 2nd year of our marriage a few years back. We thought it would be a blast but it turned put to challenge us is so many ways we never expected. The physical side of it was one thing but the emotional and spiritual side was another. At one point I thought I'd made a mistake in my choice of a husband but 9 years later we are still together and now patents to 2 wonderful boys. Looking back I think our pilgrimage together knocked edges off us both that we came away knowing each other and respecting each other so much deeper. The Camino is not responsible for thar but it got us started on our journey as a married couple and hopefully as good parents. I look forward to seeing the film when it's out.

We thoroughly enjoyed the film and the event. We really appreciated being able to hear from Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez and enjoyed their father son humour as well as some of their insights into the film and events that happening during filming. The film is gentle yet powerful. We felt like we had journeyed with the characters both emotionally and physically, but without the sore feet! A great film! We hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Hilary & Charlie Musker

It was a subtle but powerful evangelical tool I have ever come across! As I watched it I longed to be part of the pilgrim groups on it. I soul searched as I watched and it brought tears to my eyes at the scene of St James's feet. I thought about the awesomeness of God and all he does for humanity! Didn't want it to end truly! The soft rock soundtrack did it justice too. I pray I myself may win souls to God using it as an evangelical tool too! Regards, Ngozi Eleanor Egbujie

Right from the start of the film I found myself immerse in the stories of 'The Peregrinos' ordinary men and women just like you and I with an extraordinary and very personal reason for doing 'El Camino'. The balance between personal pain, compassion and humour was achieved beautifully! I have told all my friends that they MUST see it...Inspirational! The Way was a heart-warming film - far from being tragic, it really reminded us of the power of companionship to see us through difficult times. I really enjoyed the discussion with Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez after the screening - their insightful comments and anecdotes from behind the scenes really enriched our appreciation of the film. Thanks to Premier for setting this up. (Marc, from St Martin-in-the-Fields)

Thank you Premier for the invitation to see The Way. My wife and I were very moved by it. It is very refreshing to see that such films that obviously have no huge Hollywood budget behind them can get to see the light of day. It is credit to you that you got behind this film and also that Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez gave you their time. We were totally impressed with them when they gave us insight as to how and why they made the film. We will most certainly recommend the film on to our congregation. Yours sincerely, Derek & Rosemary Ford.

I thought Premier did really well with organising this event. The film is remarkable, very understated but with depth, which was mirrored by a really intelligent discussion between the audience and the 2 actors Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez afterwards. We were very impacted, and I think a sign of that is the fact that the film has 'stayed' with me for some days now, as I mull over my own hunger for more spiritual depth. I will pray that this reaches people who are soul searching and craving more from life...and I have a strong desire to do the Camino myself.

To all my friends at Premier, Can I just say a big Thank you for the wonderful evening at the Mayfair hotel this evening. My husband and I enjoyed the film very much, it was very inspirational and entertaining and I loved the choice of music in the film which was very moving. The photography and scenery was absolutely stunning and you felt like you were actually there with the pilgrims on the Camino. It truly was a film that could be watched by all and I hope it will be seen by many when it opens in April. I will certainly highly recommend it and hope that those who do see it will consider doing the Camino. To see Martin and Emilio was great as they clearly are deeply spiritual people which in itself is a blessing as they have the chance to touch the hearts of many with this wonderful film. I wish it every success. Angela from (St Augustine's RC Church Hammersmith)

What a great movie! The photography is stunning - you really can feel that you're on The Way with them all. The acting is superb and the subtlety of the storyline is refreshing. It doesn't hit you over the head with 'a message'! And with the success of The Kings Speech, maybe it's now time for non-violent/non-profanity good storyline movies to come into their own. I wish it every success. Revd Cindy Kent Anglican Priest
