Church Consultation on Violent Crime

Churches urge wider role in crime prevention

More than 20 young people were killed through gun and knife crime in London in 2007. But whilst London has born the brunt of the majority of these incidents, the scourge of violent crime is in no way confined to the capital. It's of national concern.

Premier has been working with the Metropolitan Black Police Association (MetBPA) for around 5 years, supporting their activity and initiatives in tackling the issues surrounding violent crime and in particular gun and knife crime.

Earlier this year we invited our listeners to complete a carefully crafted "Consultation" survey, put together by trained members of the Police force in consultation with other specialist agencies and church leaders. We wanted to get to the root of the concerns of the Christian community and find out their response to violent crime.

Over 3,000 church members responded from across the denominations and right across the country - one of the best responses to a survey of this kind we have ever had. You can download a summary of the report below. Outlining the Christian response and suggestions, the full version is now being discussed in various Government and police committees.

The MetBPA is inclusive and consultative in its approach to engaging with the wider community on the issues of violent crime. They act as a central resource centre to help connect ordinary citizens concerned bout these issues with the plethora of organisations and agencies that are trained and able to help. Through their Revival campaign, the MetBPA seeks to engage with local churches, which they see as centres key social influencers that have a concern for the safety of the community.

The full Consultation document was made public for the first time at a press conference in central London on Monday 22nd October. And we’ve created a free 4 page summary.

"Leaders can achieve increased impact on neighbourhood safety by deepening their churches’ involvement with the community, through prayer, pastoral and mentoring care, support for parents and partnership with other local agencies and initiatives." - Peter Kerridge,
