Whoopi Goldberg’s antics dressed as a Nun in 1992’s Sister Act turned convention on its head and became a surprise blockbuster raking in over $200 million and spawning a sequel. But can Goldberg pass on the baton to 24-year-old newcomer Patina Miller and make a convert out of us all?
As I took my seat I was transported to the late 1970’s disco era with Deloris Van Cartier singing in a nightclub with opening number ‘Fabulous’. The plot closely follows that of the film with some necessary adjustments to translate to the stage. Deloris still dreams of hitting the big time as a singing diva and still struggles with her placement by the witness protection programme into a nunnery where she crosses wits with Mother Superior, played by the excellent West End veteran Sheila Hancock. The comedic chemistry between these two leads is amazing as they are such a stark contrast yet never feel like mere caricatures but real, albeit hilarious, people.
Stand out performances besides those of Miller and Hancock are the solid support cast ranging from Monsignor Howard (played by Dad’s Army’s Ian Lavender) to Shank and his cronies, Eddie the asthmatic love interest and Sisters Patrick and Lazarus.
The songs by veteran Alan Menken were clever and witty and the costumes and lighting were so sparkly I recommend bringing sun glasses into the theatre as bling does not even describe it. Of course there were some minor quibbles; as great as the new songs were you might miss the Motown classics that the film based its concept around. Don’t expect to see the nuns sing songs such as ‘My Guy’ and ‘Aint’t No Mountain High Enough’.
But, once you’ve seen this fun packed musical you’ll make it a habit (I had to sneak one more in there didn’t I?)
With tickets selling out fast, make sure you don’t miss this amazing production and catch Miller with her outstanding voice as she is set to become a huge star.

When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won't be found - a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior.
Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang are giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood.
It is set to become a West End favourite, jumping from the big screen to the boards. Sister Act is a divine new musical comedy which will raise the roof at the London Palladium from 7 May 2009.
Based on the hit film, the musical is produced by Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment. It features a brand new score by 8 time Oscar winner Alan Menken whose credits include Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and most recently the hit movie Enchanted.
