Premier.tv Easter special

We have arrived at Easter time (a bit early this year!) and our thoughts turn to the last week of Jesus’ life on Earth. Of course there are two facets to the story, the necessary evils represented by the events on Good Friday and the triumph over death represented by the events on Easter Sunday.

Watch our programmes about The crucifixion and the resurrection and refresh what this time of year means to you.

By Justin Brierley, presenter of Unbelievable on Saturday at 2.30pm.

I'm not very good at gardening. In fact, I'm terrible at looking after plants generally. There's a potted plant in our house that we've named The Resurrection. The reason my family have named this plant The Resurrection is because it has an amazing ability to return to life after dying.

It goes for weeks and weeks without a spot of water until it ends up looking brown and sickly. The leaves wilt and the stem droops. It looks as though there's no hope! But then, a miracle occurs. When we pour some water into the dry soil of the pot, greenery reappears within a day or two.

Eventually, the stems perk up and the leaves regain their lustre. A miraculous resurrection takes place! I love our resurrection plant because it reminds me that there’s no situation, disaster, or circumstance that God can't resurrect. It also reminds me of how Christ’s followers must have felt that first Easter.

When Jesus went to the cross, it looked to His followers like the worst defeat they could imagine. Their leader, their friend and their hope for the future had been humiliated, beaten and killed. But three days later the most amazing miracle took place the resurrection of the Son of God!

Incredibly, the miracle went beyond just the raising of Jesus from the dead. One of the most important aspects of the Easter story is the transformation that took place in Jesus’ followers. They went from being a scared group of men and women hiding away, confused and sad to a community of bold and power-filled believers, ready to proclaim the Gospel message to the world.

This is the miracle of Easter! But what's even more wonderful about the first Easter is that the power of the resurrection wasn't reserved just for those who lived and walked with Jesus two thousand years ago. It's available for you and me as well. This Easter, it's my prayer that the resurrection will not only give you hope for your tomorrows... but that it will give you hope for your todays as well!
