As the fireworks explode and the dragons dance for New Year, world attention will be on China as never before. But the church in China waits and wonders what the year will bring, especially for its youth.

Open Doors has built its reputation with China over many years, but the next few months are uncertain. In this Olympic year there is the possibility of major clamp-downs, including harassment, detentions and people placed under house arrest.

In December, 270 house church pastors were handcuffed in pairs and taken away for questioning as they met for prayer and bible study. House church leaders fear this will become a pattern, ensuring their churches cannot function while the worlds attention is focused on China.

In China if a house church becomes registered, the authorities gain a lot of influence - they can appoint the pastors, for example. What's more, you can only tell other people about the gospel in the church. In most areas churches are not permitted to have a Sunday School. Legally no children can be involved in any expression of religion: so baptising anyone under 18 is forbidden.

The Chinese Youth

Because so many young Chinese people are coming to faith it is very difficult to give them proper Christian instruction. For most young Christians it is difficult to get study Bibles and Christian books. This is why Open Doors needs your help to fund distribution of more youth bibles in China.
