Saint Valentines Day

The writer of the book of Ecclesiastes declares, “to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under Heaven” (3v.1 KJV) and this includes “a time to love,”(3v.8 KJV). Saint Valentines Day on February 14th has for centuries been seen to be the time to express love by means of letters, gifts and action. Across the world over a billion cards will be sent and received, a number second only to Christmas. A fortune will be spent on flowers, chocolates, gifts and meals out. Yet the question remains: Is this a Christian Festival?

What makes a festival Christian? Is it its origin? Its current activities or does it have to have its roots in the Biblical text? And how does Saint Valentines Day meet these criteria?
