Teenager wins the right to wear a religious bangle at her school
July 29, 2008
A teenager's won the right to wear a religious bangle at her school, after the High Court ruled she'd been discriminated against.
Sarika Watkins-Singh, who's 14 and from South Wales, was expelled because she refused to remove her Kara.
The judge said it could not be compared to an item of jewellery, but was an essential part of the Sikh faith.
The case mirrors a high court battle last year, which saw a Christian teenager take her case to the High Court, arguing her right to wear a chastity ring at school.
16 year old Lydia Playfoot was told by the Millais school in West Sussex, she'd be expelled if she didn't take it off.
But in her case, judges ruled she wasn't discriminated against because of her faith.
Lydia's father - Pastor Phil Playfoot tells Premier although he's happy for Sarika - the case smacks of double standards.
