A senior church leader in Moss Side has urged people to pray after a shooting in the inner city area of Manchester early on Sunday left ten people injured.

Rev Tony Hardy said the incident on Claremont Road was "very sad" for a neighbourhood where levels of violent crime had been “improving” in recent years.

The rector of St James Moss Side told Premier: "Some people are injured, quite seriously, I think.

"So, we could pray that they'll recover fully... and we want to pray, really, that this kind of violence doesn't develop."

Armed and unarmed police officers were called to the district at around 2.30am.

A Caribbean Carnival had finished hours earlier. A number of people were in the street.

Greater Manchester Police said the injuries range from minor to major but the majority do not appear to be life-threatening.

Detective Superintendent Debbie Dooley said: "We currently have a number of people in hospital all being treated for different injuries but thankfully most do not appear to be life-threatening at this time.

"Officers are trying to establish exactly where this incident took place and who is responsible for such a dangerous attack.

"Those living or visiting the area will understandably be concerned by this incident and we will have extra officers patrolling the area throughout the morning and into the coming days."

In a message to families of those hurt, Rev Hardy added: "We do love you.

"We'll be praying for you.

"We hope your loved ones will be recovering fasts and you're with you in all.

“If anybody needs to talk about this... then our door's always open."

Anyone with any information was asked to call police on 0161 856 4166 quoting incident number 297 of 12 August or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
