Deputy Editor - Premier Youth & Children’s Work

SALARY: £25,000-£27,000 pa (depending on skills & experience)
CONTRACT: Permanent, Full Time
HOURS OF WORK: 9.15am – 5.15pm (35 hours pw)
REPORTING TO: Digital & Print Editor, Premier Youth & Children’s Work

To support and work alongside the Premier Youth and Children’s Work Editor to ensure that the publications are produced to a high standard, achieve the publication schedules and budgets and support children’s and youth ministry in the UK and beyond. To strengthen existing brand extensions (web, podcast, conferences, training events etc.). To write and edit great copy for the publications and other Premier platforms.


• Sub edit copy for print and web formats
• Write features and other articles as agreed with the editor.
• Write and send social media content
• Write blogs for publication online either via YCW or other Premier platforms where required in response to topical or news stories
• With the editor ensure editorial copy and images are provided in a timely manner each month to hit production schedule deadlines
• Script, present, source and edit audio and video content for YCW platforms
• Conduct interviews with guests, contributors
• Upload blogs and other web content
• Record and edit a weekly YCW podcast and a weekly Faith at Home radio programme
• Commission editorial copy and visuals with an expectation that many will be 360 degree commissions to include audio, web angles or web specific copy, and video as well as written copy for publication in printed and e-Versions of YCW and potentially other Premier platforms

• Create and or contribute to videos as required for YCW and other Premier content platforms
• Liaise with other staff to ensure that good administration of invoices, letters, emails, commissions and liaison between finance, advertising, web, radio, marketing and all other departments as well as key suppliers and clients are maintained
• Liaise with others to implement marketing strategies which aim to grow the subscription base according to the one and three-five year strategy goals for these titles
• Liaise regularly with the Editor and Director of Content who should agree any changes to editorial policy over major commissions, new projects, hiring and firing of columnists, redesigns and any other significant content issues
• At quarterly appraisal update meetings Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that tie into companywide goals will be agreed and reviewed
• Provide a short weekly written report to the Editor highlighting significant meetings, decisions and other relevant matters plus review of achievements and challenges from past week and listing meetings and aims of next week
• Liaise with web editors and agree on editorial for web, ezine and other electronic/ digital formats
• With the Editor ensure that YCW editorial costs remain within budget
• Attend where appropriate marketing or editorial meetings
• Attend monthly editors meetings where advance editorial features and regulars will be circulated
• Attend meetings, press releases and other gatherings as appropriate where church/ parachurch leaders meet, to liaise, network, gather news and pick up on trends
• Represent the magazine at events, conferences and on air
• Network at and deputise for the editor at meetings and events

• Journalism degree is preferable but not essential
• Journalism experience
• Ideally, experience in hands-on youth work/ children’s work, at the very least an active interest in youth work/children’s work and preparedness to get some experience


• Good journalistic and copy-editing skills
• Excellent written communication skills
• Diplomatic team player with interpersonal skills
• Ability to work with clarity of thinking under pressure with speed and accuracy
• IT skills in word processing, web, word
• Skills in marketing, web development, social media, communication to large groups, and/or marketing would be an advantage
• Experience editing podcasts / vodcasts
• Ability to solve problems under pressure and see solutions through to conclusion
• A proactive self-starter and able to work responsibly without close supervision

• A committed Christian and church member (A genuine Occupational Requirement under the Employment Equality (Religion and Belief) Regulation 2003 applies)
• Comfortable working in a busy multi-media environment
• High level of commitment and dedication
• Flexible attitude to work and a team player
