Cape Town Archbishop says Lambeth 2020 must address social needs

In a new video released earlier this week to mark the one year countdown until the conference begins – with the start and the end of the conference being hosted at Canterbury Cathedral - members of the conference's design group spoke of their hopes for Lambeth 2020.

The Archbishop of Cape Town, Dr Thabo Makgoba, who chairs the group, said that the conference must declare that Anglicans were offering themselves as "bridge-builders" to a world, which needs peace and reconciliation.

He said: "We are there for peace, to address some of the social needs. We are there, in our brokenness, to look at growth – to rebuild trust in the world."

Echoing the theme of next year's event; 'God's Church for God's World.'

The Lambeth Conference is a hugely significant event in the life of the Anglican Church. It brings together all active bishops and their spouses from across the worldwide Anglican Communion, which is more than 165 countries.

The aim is to seek God's direction for the future of the Anglican/Episcopalian Church.

Cathrine Ngangira, from Zimbabwe is training for ordination in Durham and was a youth representative at the Anglican Consultative Council in 2016 in Lusaka.

On speaking about her hopes for The Lambeth Conference, she said: "I think the message of hope is that we are all God's children. God's church for all people. We are all God's children, part of God's family... That is the message we need to live, and we need to express that in how we listen, live and share with one another."

A series of consultations on what topics should be discussed at the conference, were held during regional Primates' meetings earlier this year and the design group will draw up an agenda.
