Ceremony confirms Justin Welby as Archbishop of Canterbury

The tradition of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral meeting to decide who the next Anglican leader will be dates back one thousand years.

A medieval ceremony has begun the process of the Rt Revd Justin Welby becoming the Archbishop of Canterbury. The tradition of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral meeting to decide who the next Anglican leader will be dates back one thousand years. Just one name was put on the voting sheet and those taking part were under royal command to choose him.

Caroline Spencer is a lay member of the Canterbury Cathedral chapter and also sat on the Crown Nominations Commission - the group which selected Justin Welby.

She told Premier's News Hour how the ceremony went:
