Church of Scotland Moderator receives online abuse over independence

Mon 16 Jun 2014
By Antony Bushfield

The moderator of the Church of Scotland is appealing for calm on both sides of the Scottish independence referendum as he reveals he's received online abuse for his stance.

The Rt Rev John Chalmers and the church have always maintained neutrality in this campaign - but even that appears to be attracting abuse on the internet.

The moderator says he's received emails from "determined characters using dubious tactics to pressurise" which he says could be seen as bullying.

Last week Harry Potter author JK Rowling faced harsh criticism online after she backed the no campaign.
