New Archbishop looks to regain trust in Scotland

A new Archbishop has been appointed by Pope Francis to the diocese rocked by a scandal earlier this year.

Monsignor Leo Cushley will take over from Cardinal Keith O'Brien who stepped down in February after facing allegations of sexual misconduct. The 52 year old will move from his current position as the Head of the English-language section of the Vatican's Secretariat of State, where he worked as an interpreter for Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.

While starting his ministry in Scotland, he's previously served the Church all around the world from Botswana to Portugal to the USA. The Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh has been looked after by Archbishop Philip Tartaglia of Glasgow, who took on the role of Apostolic Administrator after the resignation of Cardinal Keith O'Brien earlier this year.

Following the events Archbishop Philip said: "I think there is little doubt that the credibility and moral authority of the Catholic Church in Scotland has been dealt a serious blow, and we will need to come to terms with that." Monsignor Cushley told Premier's Marcus Jones on the News Hour that he was looking forwarding to regaining the trust of people in the region.

His appointment has been welcomed by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Right Reverend Lorna Hood said:

"I offer Monsignor Cushley my warmest congratulations and wish him every blessing in his new appointment.

"I look forward to meeting with him in the near future, and to a strong working relationship between our two churches."

Monsignor Cushley left Scotland to work in the Holy See back in 1993 and says it'll take some time for him to get to know the area. The Archbishop-elect's already made good of his time back at home by watching his beloved golf - at the Open Championships in Muirfield. A sport he says he's "completely rubbish" at.

His ordination will take place in St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh on 21st September.
