£50 million raised so far for hunger victims in Africa

CAFOD, Christian Aid, Tearfund and World Vision are among the Christian charities in the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) leading an appeal to help 16 million people across the east of the continent who are on the brink of starvation.

Mark Bulpitt from World Vision UK told Premier's News Hour people in East Africa are in dire need.

"It's been increasing an ongoing for months. The coping mechanisms of many of the affected population are really getting exhausted and running out. Their health is rapidly deteriorating."

Bulpitt said that's why every penny is vital.

"Any donation is really gratefully received and as we can tell it adds up to a significance amount that many agencies can do lots with.

"For example World Vision, we're working in these affected areas and the funding has enabled us to start new projects that we weren't able to do before.

"We're now trucking water in areas of South Sudan, and it's also allowed to us to continue existing projects. The funds allow and are being used to provide lifesaving food and monitoring assistance to these children. Really, it does keep them alive".

The DEC states that despite some of the challenging conditions in these counties and the scale of the disaster more aid is now getting through.

The appeal launched on 15 March and the UK has matched pound for pound £10 million donated by the public to the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal through its Aid Match Fund.
