Bishop warns govt against a repeat of the Windrush scandal

The Home Office came under fire in 2018 after members of the Windrush generation and their children were wrongly detained and deported - and others denied access to healthcare, work, housing benefits and pensions.

Bishop Paul McAleenan criticised the UK government for its mishandling of environment policies and urged them to learn from their previous mistakes.

He said: "As a result of the Government's hostile environment policies, members of the Windrush generation were until very recently detained and even deported.

"The Government must now restore the human dignity of those whose rights were violated.

"They must ensure that necessary emergency support is provided and compensation made.

"Most of all they must take steps to ensure that such mistakes which undermine one's God given value are never repeated."

Saturday marked the first National Windrush Day - 71 years after migrants came from the Caribbean to help rebuild Britain after World War Two.

A permanent monument is set to be build at Waterloo Station in London, to honour the Windrush generation.
