Brighton church names new gender non-binary pastor

Rev Peta Evans, who described themselves as non-binary, is due to give their first sermon at the Village Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in the Portslade area of the city next Sunday evening.

Rev Evans said: "Returning to Brighton, I am excited to serve again in the community which first welcomed me and supported me in both my ministry journey and my gender transition."

Village MCC

"Born of the LGBTQ community to empower and serve the LGBTQ community", the Village MCC is led by senior pastor Rev Michael Hydes.

Rev Evans went on to say: "I would love to see the sincere passion and integrity of The Village MCC reach out even more widely to people of all ages, gender identities and walks of life."

Attending the Village MCC between 2003 and 2010, Rev Evan left the church to train as a clergy intern in north London. Rev Evans has also worked as a care worker and a tailor.

Rev Michael Hydes said: "I'm looking forward to working with Rev Peta. Their rootedness in Celtic Christianity and experience working in the Trans communities are just two of the many gifts they bring to their work."

Founded in the US during the late 1960s, Metropolitan Community Churches describes itself as an "inclusive" church and a "powerful voice in the LGBT equality movement."

Rev Evans added: "I am also enthusiastic about reclaiming the Bible from those who have tried to make it a weapon against those who are different, and I'm starting a group for Trans people to do just that, ReTranslation, to look at the text for themselves without past interpretations getting in the way."
