Call for prayer as survey reveals GP work overload

by Eno Adeogun

The industry magazine Pulse spoke to 900 GPs in the UK, and found each typical doctor deals with more than 41 patients a day.

Some even reported to attend to over 70 people each day.

Steve Fouch from the Christian Medical Fellowship told Premier Christian doctors he knows who want to invest in the people they see, are struggling to do so.

He added: "That is very demotivating when you're really putting all the hours that God sends your way into your work."

Meanwhile, a new GP contract that aims to reduce the pressure on family doctors is to be implemented after winning the backing of the profession.

A poll of doctors found more than seven out of ten were in favour of adopting the new deal, which was drawn up by the Scottish Government and the British Medical Association.

The new contract - which is backed with £100 million of Scottish Government funding in its first year - aims to reduce the workload family doctors face at the same time as bringing in a minimum earning expectation of just over £80,000 a year.

Fouch told Premier the importance of Christians remembering GPs in their prayers.

"I think praying for them - their physical and mental health is very important because they are human as well and the human body and mind can only cope with so much... and for them to have refreshment, encouragement and support from the community around them as well," he added.
