Catholic Church contacted by care inquiry

The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry confirmed it's looking for details about the Sacre-Coeur Orphanage.

On Tuesday a witness told the panel how she worked putting labels on tops whilst she was six years old.

She claims she was unpaid for this work.

The panel heard in July how the documents would have been sent back to England or France when the care homes closed.

It heard from Children's Services director Tony Le Sueur who said he was aware of a textile factory at the orphanage but all girls were paid.

But the witness said girls were forced to work after school and on Saturdays and received no payment.

A member of the panel said: "Further to this morning's evidence, the first to deal with Sacre-Coeur, the inquiry is going to be attempting to track down documents from the home.

"It seems likely there are more potential witnesses from this home.

"It is believed the documents may be in France, but efforts will be made through the Catholic Church to trace them."
