Jeremy Lefroy has been speaking as the International Development committee, on which he sits, produces a report which suggests while grants for some nations are becoming "less appropriate" - some spending "remains vital".
The group is recommending the rate of national income that the UK gives away remains at 0.7%.
It's also calling on the UK to use new laws rather than just aid to help other nations.
Jeremy Lefroy who's the MP for Stafford spoke on Premier's News Hour. He said: "They may say the number is falling but the number of poor people in the world is still extremely high, whether they're in the middle income countries such as India...or places like the Democratic Republic of Congo...where the number is in the hundreds of millions and they still need us to work alongside them.
"The Department for International Development is acknowledged as a world leader in using money effectively."
A bill looking to get the 0.7% target enshrined in law is currently working its way through parliament, although it's unclear whether there's enough time to get it through before the election.
Jeremy Lefroy is supporting the bill and says it's good to see the UK leading the way on international aid.
He said: "It's extremely important, not only for the countries that we work with and for the world generally because we're talking about matters that affect them.
"But also for us because we're talking about climate change, the effects of poverty which drives people to seek a better life elsewhere and we have a big debate around immigration."
