The debate was promised by Prime Minister David Cameron in the wake of the NATO summit which took place in Cardiff last week.
Over the summer there were calls for Parliament to be recalled to deal with the issue of Iraq but they were rejected by the Government.
Instead a number of emergency COBRA meetings were held to discuss the UK's response to the crisis.
The government agreed to send more aid to the region and to support US troops through limited military action.
Today MPs were given the opportunity to further discuss how the UK should respond to this situation and other international matters.
Former Foreign Office minister and Christian MP Alastair Burt was taking part in the debate.
He told Premier's News Hour these are issues we cannot ignore.
He said: "The United Kingdom is engaged.
"You could be a civilian flying over a disputed territory and be shot down by an anti-aircraft missile.
"You could have someone from your community very anxious about foreign affairs, be brainwashed by somebody and come back to live down the road."
The debate was held in the absence of David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband who were all in Scotland campaigning ahead of next week's referendum.
