Christian students back Labour's tuition fee pledge

by Aaron James

On Friday, Labour leader Ed Miliband gave a speech in Leeds, saying he'd pay for the cut in fees by reducing tax breaks on the pensions of people earning £150,000 a year or more.

The Leader of the Opposition also said Labour will not go back on its promise, even if it has to go into a coalition with another party which doesn't support the reduction.

Business Secretary Vince Cable says Labour will not fulfil its promise, while Universities UK has criticised the proposal by claiming "the long-term feasibility of such a promise may be difficult."

The Student Christian Movement (SCM) has said the move will encourage more young people to vote and more people from poorer backgrounds to go to university.

SCM also said it understood why universities may oppose the reduction in fees, but suggested more public funding for universities should also be considered. It added that tuition fees are an issue for the taxpayer, because a lot of student debt does not get paid back.

Ellis Tsang, from SCM, told Premier's News Hour: "This is an issue that our students care deeply about. We believe it's a social issue, and as such I think it's a good step in the right direction, especially because it will open the debate for more students to get engaged in this election.

"We want to make sure more families and more students from poorer backgrounds have access to higher education, and I think reducing tuition fees will ease the fear of debt which is actually a very crippling issue for a lot of graduates.

"Certainly room to do more... the debate does not stop here, it really does start here. Our members would support even further reductions to be honest."
