Church Architecture Awards shortlists announced

There are two categories: new church buildings, re-orderings and extensions or alterations to existing church buildings feature in the 2018 Presidents' Awards, while repairs are in the 2018 King of Prussia category.

Its shortlist of six buildings include a new chapel in the Highlands of Scotland built in Romanesque style with Celtic key patterns; the renovation of Ealing Green church - which was a response to the West London riots of 2011; St Michael & All Angels church in Summertown, Oxford, Grade II listed St Mark church in Clerkenwell, London and finally St Mary's church, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

The 2018 King of Prussia Gold medal award is a separate category for church repair and conservation architecture.

That shortlist includes spire repairs to St Jude in Kensington (now occupied by St Mellitus Theological College) 15 tonnes of which had weathered away over the lifetime of the spire; roof repairs to St Peter, Paul and St Philomena's church in New Brighton, Liverpool, a project which they say faced many challenges due to the then innovative use of reinforced concrete when the church was built in 1933.

Another nominee is the conservation work to St Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington in London - a project which has brought back to life the architectural and decorative quality of this Gothic Revival masterpiece.

The awards are run by the National Churches Trust, the UK's church buildings support charity, and the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association.

Winning entries will be revealed at an awards ceremony to be held at St Mellitus College on Thursday, 1st November 2018.

The Duke of Gloucester will announce the 2018 winners of the Presidents' Award for new church architecture.

Prince Nicholas von Preussen will announce the 2018 winner of the King of Prussia Gold Medal for repair and conservation architecture.
