Churches ready to respond to storms

Stormy weather's knocked out power for tens of thousands of people, and is causing travel disruption on the roads and railways.

Winds of over 100 miles-an-hour have been recorded, causing havoc across the UK.

Around 20,000 homes are without power in the UK while flooding has seen many evacuating their homes.

David Cameron's been meeting victims of the flooding in Yalding in Kent.

The Prime Minister's been speaking of the need for more work to protect homes in future: "We are seeing these events take place more often.

"The Government is spending more on flood defences over the next four years than over the last four years.

"There's a lot of flood defences being built - something like 80,000 houses were protected this time but we've got to do more."

Keith Blayze, who was trapped in his home in Maidstone because of flood waters, says it's been the worst Christmas of his life.

He said: "Wherever I looked it was like the middle of the sea. Everywhere was water and it wasn't shallow water it was deep - nearly chest high - and frightening."

Pastor Josh Cordray heads up Maidstone International Community Church.

He told Premier's Marcus Jones on the News Hour churches in the area are ready to respond.

The weather's causing widespread problems on the roads and the railways.

There are around 60 flood warnings in place across Britain.

High winds have caused trees to block roads and rail lines - South West Trains alone has cleared over 140 fallen trees in the last three days.

A number of train lines are reporting cancellations and delays.

The Environment Agency said rainfall on Thursday night was less than expected and it's hoped the bad weather will ease in the next 24 hours so the clean-up operation can get underway.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.
