Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow

The event kicked off with the opening ceremony at Celtic Park last night and will go on for the next 11 days.

Organisation More than Gold is co-ordinating the church's response to the games and helping them open their doors to the thousands of visitors.

The Catholic Archdiocese, Church of Scotland, Salvation Army and a number of other churches are involved in the programme which will see water and food given out to spectators.

Communications manager Aline Lidwell told Premier: "It is incredibly important that we as the church get behind what the community is doing and that we take every opportunity to be available just to serve and offer generous hospitality to people.

"Encouraging churches to get involved, I think, is really important because the Church is the community," she said.

153 events have already been registered on the organisations website including fun days, Commonwealth parties, gospel readings and family BBQs.

71 teams from around the world will participate in sports like netball, rugby, lawn bowls and boxing.
