Employment tribunal of Christian nurse fired after discussing religion begins

Sarah Kuteh, who had been a nurse for 15 years, lost her job at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford after a number of patients complained about her conduct.

An employment tribunal heard today that one patient said that Kuteh had told him if he prayed to God he'd have a better chance of survival.

Another patient complained that Kuteh had spent a lot of time talking about religion rather than completing a pre-operative questionnaire.

In all, eight complaints were made against Kuteh before she lost her job last August.

Pavel Stroilov, representing Kuteh, argued that she was simply caring for patients in their time of need.

He said: "A nurse without compassion would be unworthy of the name. On top of performing her immediate duties, a good nurse would try and find kind words to say to her patient."

But Sarah Collins, general manager for medicine at Darent Valley Hospital said Kuteh had "spirituality blurred the professional boundary" between herself and patients.

Collins added that Kuteh had been warned against her behaviour twice before her dismissal.

But Stroilov argued that Kuteh was not "adequately informed" of the allegations against her and that the patients' complaints against her were "wholly unsatisfactory."

The tribunal continues.
