Speaking to The Sunday Times for the first time since the incident, Oliver Salbris, the bus driver of the No 430 bus said: "The consequences could have been terrible for her – and for me."
A jogger on London's Putney Bridge may have deliberately targeted a 33-year-old woman that he pushed off the pavement and into the path of the bus that Oliver was driving. CCTV footage shows the bus quickly swerve around the woman to avoid running her over.
The Metropolitan police are still investigating the matter after their appeal on August 8 resulted in the arrest and release of a millionaire banker in connection with the assault. However, Eric Bellquist was able to prove that he was in America at the time of the incident.
Salbris, recalling the event, said: "I've never seen anything like this before.
"I was focusing on the road and I just saw the collision between the jogger and the woman.
"It was a fairly close call. I thought I was going to touch her. If I hadn't swerved, I would have smashed her head. It was reflex and I would say thanks to God."
Since the event, however, the woman, who only had minor injuries, has not only chosen to remain anonymous but has not even come forward to thank Salbris for what amounts to saving her life. Nevertheless, his employer, Go Ahead London now plans to nominate him for the accolade of London's top bus driver.
