Jeremy Corbyn irks Catholics by taking communion

his happened while he attended the funeral of the former president of the GMB union Mary Turner with his wife, Laura Alvarez at Sacred Heart Church in Kilburn, north west London.

Mr Corbyn spoke at the funeral and paid his respects to her family and Mary's memory.

According to the Mirror, Clare Bowskill from the Latin Mass Society said Catholics would find the act "completely disrespectful. Because it's not respecting what Catholics believe in."

His Mexican wife, Laura Alvarez is a practising Catholic, however, a spokesperson for Mr Corbyn confirmed that he has not converted to Catholicism.

In the Catholic faith, a wafer and wine represent the body and blood of Christ in a process performed by the officiating priest known as 'transubstantiation'. However, non-Catholics are forbidden by church law from accepting communion, except in extreme circumstances, but can take part in the service by asking for a blessing.

The Diocese of Westminster, which is responsible for the church Mr Corbyn was attending, in response said it expected celebrants to be "in full communion with the Catholic Church" in order to receive Communion.
