MPs have rejected a change in the law that would have allowed a Roman Catholic to take the throne. Despite the Church of England giving its support to the Succession to the Crown Bill the amendment was rejected. However, MPs did vote to end the discrimination against female royals, meaning men will no longer take precedence over women in the order of succession.
