Man arrested over Salford church arson attack

Six fire engines and around 30 firefighters were called to the Church of the Ascension on Ascension Road in Salford after the blaze broke out at around 11.20pm on Sunday.

The fire gutted the inside of the church, which had recently undergone a £250,000 renovation.

Following an appeal to the public and release of CCTV footage showing a person of interest, investigators arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of arson.

He has been released on bail until 30 March.

Greater Manchester Police is still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Karl Dalton, of GMP's Salford Borough, said: "I would like to thank the public for their support which has helped us make some positive steps forward following our appeal for information on Monday.

"However, we are continuing to investigate and it is still vital that anyone with information gets in touch as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 5461 or 101.
