The research found 55 per cent do not object to homosexual relationships, up from 31 per cent in 2012. It also found stances on abortion and sex before marriage have also softened in recent years.
The issue of sexuality has divided Anglicans, sparking concerns of a pending schism. Last week, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York announced a new 'teaching document' on sexuality by the Church of England would be published in 2020.
Roger Harding, head of public attitudes at the National Centre for Social Research who produced a report into the findings, was quoted by The Times as saying: "It suggests people are taking their moral views from elsewhere."
According to the statistics, 73 per cent of Anglicans asked said they believe sex outside of marriage is permissible, nearly the same as the proportion of the general population. The figure stood at 54 per cent in 2013 and a third in 1985.
The survey suggested Catholics are becoming more liberal than ever, with 61 per cent saying they thought women should be allowed to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Some 70 per cent of the general population would support an abortion on the same grounds.
However, Mike Davidson, from Core Issues Trust tells Premier the survey presents a false impression.
He said: "I think it creates a false impression – that may be true of Anglican Christians in the United Kingdom... but certainly globally, that isn't the case."
