Mourners to pay respects to Cardinal Cormac

The Cardinal's body will lie in Westminster Cathedral throughout the day on Tuesday, Catholic leaders have announced. Visitors are being invited to attend and to sign a book of condolence.

Cardinal Cormac, who served as leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales from 2000 until 2009, died on Friday afternoon at the aged of 85. He had been diagnosed with cancer.

The reception of his body will take place at 10am on Tuesday in Westminster Cathedral with a short service which members of the public are welcome to attend.

The current Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Vincent Nichols will preside at the Solemn Vespers of the Dead from 5pm. The Archbishop of Birmingham, Bernard Longley will preach.

The Requiem Mass and burial of Cardinal Cormac will take place at midday the following day. Cardinal Vincent will preside and Archbishop of Cardiff George Stack will preach the homily.

The Catholic Church in England and Wales has announced admission for the Requiem Mass will be ticketed in order to allow as many parishes and schools of the diocese to be represented.

A Memorial Mass for Cardinal Cormac will be celebrated at the cathedral at 5.30pm on Wednesday 4th October. All are welcome to attend.
