Prayers said for royal baby and family

The royal baby has been welcomed into the world in prayer.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu has released a prayer for the prince and his parents William and Kate.

It says:

"Generous God, Thank you for endowing the human race with the gift of sharing in your work of creation. We thank you for the Royal baby. May your holy angels guard and protect him. Give to William and Kate joy and peace and fill their home with the love of the Lord Jesus. Amen."

Meanwhile the Archbishop of Canterbury has passed on his congratulations to new parents William and Kate.

Most Revd Justin Welby tweeted from his account @ABCJustin: "Delighted for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they welcome their baby boy. May God bless them all with love, health and happiness."

The Archbishop of Westminster, the leader of English and Welsh Catholics has also released a statement.

Most Revd Vincent Nichols said: "On behalf of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, I would like to congratulate Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their son, His Royal Highness, the Prince of Cambridge.

"The birth of the new Prince will be a source of joy not only for the Royal Family but for the peoples of the United Kingdom and beyond.

"I assure Their Royal Highnesses of the prayers and best wishes of the Catholic Church in England and Wales for their new family.

"May Our Lord Jesus Christ bless and protect them, and may the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Joseph intercede for them."

The boy, who is yet to be named, was born at 16:24 BST yesterday afternoon weighing in 8lb 6oz at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London.

Prince William says he and his wife couldn't be happier.

He's also praised the care they received at St Mary's hospital calling it 'tremendous'.

The Duke and Duchess spent the night in hospital but if the mum and baby get the all clear from doctors, they could be released today.

Prince Charles has spoken of his delight at becoming a grandfather while President Obama called the birth a joyous occasion.

Attention turns now to what the baby will be called.

Shirley Tart is the Royal Correspondent for the Shropshire Star and a church warden who attended the couples' wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey in 2011.

Some reports have suggested William and Kate will stay with her parents when they leave the hospital.

She told Premier's Maria Rodrigues Toth it's going to be a steep learning curve for Kate.

Gun salutes have taken place in London to honour the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby.

A 41 gun salute took place at Green Park next to Buckingham Palace while a 62 gun salute was fired from the Tower of London.

The bells of Westminster Abbey are ringing out for three hours in celebration of the royal birth.

A team of 10 people from the Westminster Abbey Company of Ringers began a full peal on the Abbey's 10 bells at 2 o'clock and will continue until around 5pm.

Three of the bell ringers taking part did the same for the new Prince's father when William was born in June 1982.
